A few thoughts on the Foundation of Character . . . Integrity

Many people view integrity as an outdated idea, no longer applicable to them in our fast-paced world. We believe the need for integrity is perhaps as great as it has ever been. It is the foundation upon which many other qualities are built, such as respect, dignity, and trust. Integrity is defined as: adherence to moral and ethical principles, soundness of moral character, honesty.

We believe integrity is about the small things - little things make or break you. If we cross the line of our values - whether by an inch or a mile - we're still out of bounds. Honesty is a habit we ingrain by doing the right thing all the time, day after day, week after week year after year.

Integrity, not to be confused with reputation - reputation is what people think we are; character is what we are. A good reputation is valuable but it exists because it's a reflection of our character.

Integrity is not determined by circumstances. It is determined by the choices we make, to take full responsibility for our character. Setting aside the negative experiences we have had, including difficult circumstances and people. Our goal is to commit to truth, reliability, honesty, and confidentiality as the pillars of our life.

Integrity is our best friend - keeps our priorities right. When we are tempted to take shortcuts, it helps us stay the right course. When others criticize us unfairly, it helps us keep going and take the high road. When others' criticism is valid, integrity helps us to accept what they say, learn from it and keep growing.

We feel trust is a benefit - the bottom line of integrity is that it allows others to trust us - without trust we have nothing. It is the glue that holds people together.

We commit ourselves to honesty, reliability, and confidentiality. We don't try to hide your flaws.

Deciding ahead of time you do not have a price. As President George Washington said, "Few men have the virtue to withstand the highest bidder." Decide before you are confronted that you won't sell your integrity: not for power, not for pride and not for money.
